The Third Dentition

Can humans grow back teeth????

It is a known fact that lot of reptiles and fish have many sets of teeth . As these animals lose one or more teeth ,a new one come along as a replacement.

Sharks are known to have teeth laid out in10-15 rows. As it looses one tooth, the tooth behind it is brought forward to replace it. Sharks are known to loose between 20,000-30,000 teeth in their life time. That surely is a huge turnaround!!!

Snails have ~25000 teeth on their tongue and they too are replaced continuously.

Rabbits, squirrels and rats have teeth that keep growing from below as their teeth wear out.

However, we mammals particularly humans, have lost the ability to grow back teeth in the course of evolution. We only have 2 sets of teeth during our life time. Our milk teeth are replaced by permanent teeth by the time we are 12-14 yrs of age. After this the wisdom teeth erupt.

Uptill now,we had  very limited options of replacing lost teeth by fixed means which closely resembled the natural teeth in form and function. With the successful placement of dental implants since 2 decades dentists can safely and easily replace missing teeth with predictable outcomes.

Dental implants are now called the”THIRD DENTITION”.
